By this point in the book it should be abundantly clear that being purpose-driven and purposeful in work are essential in today’s changing environment. It is now crucial to look at how one becomes purposeful. To be clear, being purposeful in the future of work does not necessarily mean you need to have a business that is purpose-driven – for example running a non-profit organization. You can still run a for-profit company and lead with purpose. You can also have a business that has a strong purpose and not be personally aligned to that purpose. The two things are not correlational. The trick is ensuring your personal purpose is aligned.

This is no mean feat.

The task is challenging because we are constrained by the shackles of our history, our education and our experiences. If everything we ever learned about business is now redundant it makes for a very difficult journey to discover the right path that works for us.

The reason we rely on history and experience is because they provide a short cut for us to make decisions. However, as we have argued throughout this book, the short cuts that have worked in the past no longer give us the right information to base our decisions on in the future. Most of us are making decisions relying on the wrong information. To start making decisions with the right information, we need to work much harder to sift through the constant onslaught of information while being steadfast in our own truth. Not everyone has the time, the energy or the capacity to do this. And that is perfectly fine. However, for you to achieve unbounded success in the future of work, I argue that this is absolutely fundamental, and it becomes the first step to achieving success as a rebellious leader.

In school we are asked what we aspire to be, but never what we care about most. If you recall earlier I shared that as a child I wanted to work at the local ice cream shop so I feel this is a fairly arbitrary assessment. In business school we utilize historical case studies to understand basic business practices, accounting principles and management tactics. Our entire education provides examples – paths paved by others. Extraordinarily little time is spent looking inward and taking the time to discover what it is we are most passionate about. But it is this passion, this internal drive, that will give you the grit required to gather the right information to allow you to make the right decisions for yourself. This will ultimately lead to your success in the future of work.

The concept of grit as a predictor of success is especially topical following Angela Duckworth’s viral TED Talk, which has generated over 19 million views since it was uploaded in 2013, and bestselling book Grit: The power of passion and perseverance. As Duckworth defines it: ‘Grit is passion and sustained persistence applied towards long-term achievement, with no particular concern for rewards or recognition along the way.’
